Standard varieties of these crops produce separate male and female flowers, and their heavy, sticky pollen does not move effectively on the wind. An insect must normally visit a male flower, collect pollen, and then visit a female flower while its stigma is receptive. Most cucurbit flowers open during the morning and may remain useful for only several hours, so a flower missed by bees cannot usually wait until the following day. Hand-pollination is appropriate when female flowers repeatedly close without developing, tiny fruits turn yellow and shrivel, or cucumbers and squash become narrow, curved, or irregularly shaped. Gardeners should first confirm that female flowers are actually present because cucurbit plants commonly produce male flowers before female flowers appear. On cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, melons, and gourds, a male flower grows on a relatively slender stem and has no swollen structure behind the petals. Inside the flower are pollen-covered anthers, which may appear yellow or orange. A female flower has a small immature fruit, called an ovary, immediately below the petals. On a female zucchini flower, the ovary resembles a miniature zucchini; on a pumpkin, it looks like a tiny round pumpkin; and on a cucumber, it resembles a very small cucumber. The center of the female flower contains a sticky stigma designed to receive pollen. Both flowers should be newly opened. Old, wilted, rain-soaked, or closed flowers are poor choices because their pollen or stigmas may no longer function well. Hand-pollination should usually be performed early in the morning after the flowers open but before heat causes them to close. Select a fresh male flower with visible dry pollen and a newly opened female flower. More than one male flower can be used when pollen appears scarce. The same general method works across cucurbit crops, although the flowers of melons and cucumbers are smaller than those of squash and pumpkins. [2][4]

The simplest method for squash, zucchini, and pumpkins is to remove a newly opened male flower and peel back its petals, exposing the pollen-bearing anther. Touch or gently roll the anther across every receptive section of the stigma inside a female flower. The stigma often has several lobes, and pollen should be placed across all visible surfaces to encourage complete fertilization. One male flower may provide enough pollen for one or more female flowers, although using one male flower per female flower helps ensure adequate coverage. Do not press hard enough to damage the stigma. A small, clean artist’s brush or cotton swab may also be used. Brush the anthers inside a male flower until yellow pollen is visible on the tool, and then transfer it to the female stigma. This brush method is useful for the smaller flowers of cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, bitter melons, and gourds. Use pollen from the same crop and preferably the same variety when predictable fruit and seed characteristics matter. Pollinating a squash flower with cucumber pollen will not work because they are not compatible. After pollination, leave the flower attached and avoid spraying it directly with water. The petals may close naturally. Successful pollination becomes evident when the ovary remains green and begins enlarging over the following several days. A fruit that yellows, softens, or stops growing was either insufficiently pollinated or lost because of another form of plant stress. [2][5]

Seedless watermelons require special attention. Their triploid plants produce fruit with few developed seeds, but they still need pollen from compatible seeded diploid watermelon plants. For most gardens, planting the proper proportion of pollinizer plants and supporting bees is more practical than relying entirely on hand-pollination. Standard seeded watermelons, muskmelons, and specialty melons can be hand-pollinated in the same way as cucumbers, but several thorough pollen transfers may be needed because complete fertilization affects fruit development and shape. Hand-pollination should be repeated whenever new female flowers open during periods of limited bee activity. [1][2]

4. Hand-Pollinating Tomatoes, Peppers, and Eggplants

Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants do not require pollen to be carried between separate male and female flowers. Each flower contains compatible male and female structures and can normally pollinate itself. However, pollen still must be released from the anthers. Wind and bee vibration usually provide enough movement outdoors. In a greenhouse, enclosed patio, or unusually still garden, gardeners can assist by gently shaking flower clusters during the middle of the day when pollen is dry. An electric toothbrush can be held against the flower stem for a second or two to imitate the vibration produced by a bumble bee, but the tool should not strike the flower directly. Tapping a support stake or gently flicking the flower cluster is often sufficient. Peppers can be lightly shaken or brushed inside with a clean artist’s brush. Eggplants also respond to vibration because their pollen is released through small openings in the anthers. Hand assistance may improve pollen release, but it will not overcome pollen damaged by extreme temperatures. Tomatoes commonly drop flowers when daytime or nighttime temperatures interfere with pollen viability, and peppers and eggplants can also lose blossoms under heat, cold, drought, or severe plant stress. These crops should therefore be vibrated rather than treated like squash flowers; there is no need to locate separate male and female blossoms. [3][6]
