A bee swarm can contain thousands of honey bees, but its appearance does not reveal its level of danger. Swarming is colony reproduction. USDA and University of Florida guidance describe both European and Africanized swarms as more docile than established colonies. The difference is not absolute. A swarm may sting when struck, sprayed, shaken, trapped, handled, or disturbed by machinery. “Killer bee” is a media term for Africanized honey bees. These bees descended from African honey bees introduced into Brazil during the 1950s and later spread through parts of the Americas. They cannot be identified with confidence by color, shape, or size alone. Morphometric measurements or genetic testing may be needed. Their venom is not more potent than the venom of European honey bees. The main danger is the scale of their colony-defense response. An established Africanized colony may react to less disturbance, release more defenders, pursue a person farther, and remain disturbed longer than a European-derived colony. Serious incidents result from the number of stings received, not from a special form of venom. A person with a severe sting allergy can experience a life-threatening reaction after one sting.[3][5]

Africanized swarms are often less defensive than established Africanized colonies, but they still require caution. Their main task during swarming is finding a nesting cavity, not defending brood or honey. Africanized bees also swarm more often than European-derived bees, which increases the number of small swarms and new colonies in an area. The public cannot determine the genetics of a swarm by looking at it. Every unknown swarm in a region where Africanized bees occur should be treated as capable of defensive behavior. 5. Recognizing a Dangerous Colony

A sudden change in a managed colony’s temperament can warn a beekeeper that the colony may no longer be safe to handle under normal procedures. Warning signs include a large number of bees leaving the entrance in response to minor disturbance, bees striking a veil, defenders following a person far from the hive, or the colony remaining disturbed after the beekeeper leaves. Behavior does not confirm Africanized genetics, since European-derived colonies can also become defensive because of weather, queen genetics, predators, vibration, robbing, or rough handling. It does show that the colony presents a safety problem. A highly defensive colony should not be approached without protective clothing, a clear escape route, and help from a person trained to manage defensive bees.[3][5]

6. What to Do When You Find a Swarm

Do not stand beneath the swarm, touch it, strike the support, mow beside it, or block the bees’ flight path. Keep children, pets, livestock, and bystanders away. Do not assume the swarm will leave before entering a nearby structure. Contact a local beekeeper, university extension office, pest-control operator, or bee-removal service that handles swarms. Removal practices differ because location, building access, Africanized-bee risk, and local pesticide rules affect the response. A swarm on an isolated branch presents less risk than bees entering a playground structure, wall, attic, chimney, utility box, or animal enclosure. Once bees occupy a cavity and build comb, removal becomes harder and the colony may defend the site.[1][4][6]

7. What to Do During a Bee Attack

If many bees begin stinging or chasing you, run to an enclosed building or vehicle. Protect your eyes, mouth, nose, head, and neck while moving. Do not stop to swat the bees. Do not jump into a pool or other body of water because bees may remain above the surface. Call emergency services after reaching shelter when someone has received many stings, has trouble breathing, becomes faint, develops widespread swelling, or has a known bee-sting allergy. Remove honey bee stingers as soon as possible because venom can continue entering the skin after the bee leaves. Seek medical care for severe symptoms or numerous stings.[4][7]

Conclusion

A bee swarm is not the same as an established hive. Most swarms are focused on relocation and are less defensive because they have no brood nest, comb, or stored honey at the temporary site. Africanized honey bees, often called killer bees, follow the same swarm process, but established Africanized colonies can produce a faster and larger defensive response than European-derived colonies. The correct response is neither panic nor casual handling. Keep away from the bees, prevent disturbance, protect people and animals, and use a qualified professional when removal is needed. Treat every unknown swarm with caution because appearance cannot identify Africanized genetics and a cluster may begin establishing a nest before anyone notices.
