It is misleading to name one absolute slowest mushroom because a mature specialty block can fruit sooner than an immature oyster block. In practical terms, maitake and many wood-dependent mushrooms reward patience and stable conditions, while oysters are normally chosen when speed is the main goal.

Temperature, moisture, light, fresh air, nutrition, and developmental readiness interact to control fruiting. Before buying, check the substrate, activation method, expected temperature, estimated pinning period, and number of possible flushes. Choosing according to available conditions and desired timing produces better results than choosing from photographs alone.
8. Maximizing Yield Without Forcing Growth
A kit gives its best yield when the mycelium follows its normal schedule. Keep it within the recommended temperature range, maintain humid air without waterlogging the surface, and provide gentle fresh-air exchange. Do not repeatedly soak, chill, cut, or move a block unless the instructions require it. Harvest at the recommended stage so the mushrooms retain good texture and the block preserves resources for later flushes. After harvest, many kits need a resting period followed by controlled rehydration. Spreading green mold, foul odors, or slimy decay may indicate contamination.
